What Kind of Desktop PC Case Should I Buy?

Posted by admin On August - 29 - 2009

So I bet most of you have read a bit about desktop PC cases and the more you read, the more you want one. But you’re not really sure what kind you should get, there is so many! Computer cases come in all different sizes and materials, some with pretty windows and most with nice LED lights shining out of them. I’m going to help you determine which kind you would like best, starting with the sizes.

The two most popular case sizes are medium and full, medium is most likely about the size of your computer case now if it was purchased by a manufacturer. If that’s the case and you are looking to buy a new desktop PC case, then medium size is right for you! But not me, I got so bored with my computer I decided to build my own! I bought different parts from all over the country through online retailers, thinking the bigger the better. So if you’re like me and want to build a new PC, then I would go with a full size tower. Full size towers accommodate more room for large cooling units and graphics cards, which is usually the two pieces of hardware that don’t fit into medium size cases. Yes, I agree the full tower is a bit large and can take up a lot of room on your desk; but oh man does it look like a beast, let me tell you!

So now that you know what size you need, it’s time to pick out a material! Desktop computer cases can come in many different types of material, such as steel, aluminum, acrylic and wood. All of these materials do its job and when picking out your case, it’s ok to pick out whichever one looks the best to you. But there are some differences in the material that you should know about. Steel cases are very popular because they are the strongest and yet the cheapest, but has the possibility to rust over time if not well maintained. For a little bit more money you can get an aluminum case, this type of case is much lighter than steel and is very useful if you are planning on moving this case often. So if you’re looking to go to some LAN parties, aluminum is best for you. But I must let you know, since the aluminum cases are much lighter, it tends to give off more noise rather than a thick steel case. Now if you’re looking to grab some attention, go with the acrylic designed cases that have interior LED lights. Since the Acrylic designed cases are see through, it’s by far the most unique type of computer design. But when dealing with a acrylic computer case, you must clean it regularly. Since the case is transparent, you are able to see the buildup of dust, which isn’t very attractive. It is also the most expensive, but it’s known to be the quietest and it maintains a nice cool temperature.

I hope this doesn’t make your decision too hard when choosing a new desktop PC case, because all of these materials can certainly do the job needed. When shopping for a new case, just choose whichever one looks the nicest to you. Make sure you pick a design that when you have some guests over, the computer room is the first stop!

Airflow in Your Desktop PC Case

Posted by admin On August - 24 - 2009

Ever feel the top of your PC and it was really warm? If so, then do not stop reading! Some of the main reasons computers crash or stop working is because the hardware inside ends up breaking. If a computer isn’t too old, there is no reason for any hardware problems…unless you installed it yourself and made a boo-boo! This happens because your hardware becomes overheated. Hardware becomes overheated due to poor airflow inside of your desktop PC case. It’s like a person, about to have heat stroke because it’s been sitting in heat for long periods of time…so how would you help the person? Give him some water and a nice cool breeze! Of course I’m not saying to give your computer some water, but instead of water you can try cleaning it of dust and debris buildup every so often. As for the cool breeze, your case fans should take care of that for you.

So as you have learned, one of the main causes for hardware failure is poor airflow in the computer case. Airflow is as important to a computer as food is to people. Without the proper airflow, your hardware will end up getting stale air instead of fresh air, and will increase the build-up of dust. Newer desktop PC cases are focusing on good airflow since this issue is becoming more and more common. When looking to buy a new desktop PC case, or even just concerned with your own PC’s temperature, be sure that it has the proper airflow needed.

Desktop PC cases should have at least 3 fans/vents built into the case. You should have one fan placed in front of the case so that it can blow fresh air into the case. You should also have a fan in the back of the case, blowing the air inside of the case out (PSU’s typically have a fan built in that also sends air out of the case. This creates a good airflow throughout your entire case, always keeping the air fresh and it will prevent dust from building up quickly. Most of the newer cases also keep a fan on top of the case, this is called a blowhole. Just like any other blowhole, it shoots out air; this allows the air above the motherboard to rise outside of the case to prevent dust buildup. The most important fan inside of your computer is your CPU fan, this is because your CPU is the hardware that performs most of the PC’s tasks, and therefore it gets hotter. You should always have a fan blowing directly onto your CPU.

There are other alternatives to cooling your system rather than setting up fans in the correct positions to make sure you get the correct airflow, but it’s the cheapest method and it gets the job done. There is also water cooling, which is when water passes through hoses making sure the temperature stays cool. Water cooling is more expensive and is a hassle to install, but it is much more effective than traditional fan cooling. A method that is becoming more popular and is the most expensive is Liquid submersion cooling, submersing the hardware components in a thermally conductive liquid. This method is the most effective and there is no need for fans or pumps.

So treat your computer good! Make sure it’s receiving the nice cool breeze and glass of water it needs, metaphorically speaking. It’s good to clean your computer every 2 or 3 months, make sure it’s done in a clean environment and all you need is some paper towels and some compressed air. Factors to Consider Before Buying a New Desktop PC Case

Posted by admin On August - 20 - 2009

When choosing a new desktop PC case for your computer, there are not many factors that come into play. But there are a few factors, and they are extremely important! After buying your new desktop PC case you don’t want to realize that it’s not the right size, which brings us to the first factor to investigate. When it comes to PC cases, size does matter!

Computer Cases come mostly in mid-tower size or a full-tower size, each depending on what hardware is running inside of them. Desktop PC cases also have different form factors; these describe the general layout of the case and the major components that fit into it. The major components that must match the correct size of the case are the power supply and the motherboard. However, usually when you purchase a new desktop PC case a power supply is provided, so it’s not too much to worry about. But not always so make sure your power supply dimensions match the size listed in the case requirements. If you look at the specifications of your motherboard, you will see what form factor it matches up too (such as Micro ATX, BTX, LPX or Mini-LPX, NLX, etc. the most common now is ATX). When choosing a desktop PC case, make sure your power supply and motherboard are compatible! If not then your computer components will not be able to fit into the case, causing the computer not to perform correctly.

Also when purchasing your desktop PC case, make sure that there is a correct amount of drive bays needed for your hardware (meaning that if you have four cd-rom drives, make sure the case has at least four drive bays.) As well you will need to make sure that the case has the correct amount of internal drive bays to insert your hard drives.

All of the newer computer cases usually do, but just to make sure, check that it has front and rear USB ports! USB’s are becoming more and more popular and almost all of the new electronics require USB slots, and you don’t want to be stuck with the hassle reaching all the way to the back of the computer because it only has rear USB slots!

Speaking of hassle, that brings me to the next factor to discuss, SIZE! Always look at the dimensions of the case and make sure you have room for it on your desk. My first experience buying a new desktop PC case, I really underestimated the size and it barely fits on my desk. Make sure your case is large enough for your hardware (form factor) but small enough for your desk!

The last factor but certainly not the least is airflow (computer cooling). It gets hot in that thing! Your hardware needs a nice cold breeze to cool down. Computer Cases need large fans as well as large vents. Especially if you have some heavy duty hardware you’re looking to run, you don’t want it to overheat. Internal thermometers are a plus, so you can monitor the temperature inside your case. Dust also has a habit of building up on your hardware, causing it to perform slower, so make sure fans are pointing in the direction of a vent.

It may seem like a lot to worry about, but it’s most definitely worth it! After only a few minutes of research you can order your very own new desktop PC case and have an exciting new appearance to your computer!

Why Buy a New Desktop PC Case?

Posted by admin On August - 20 - 2009

A computer case is the type of product that makes most people take the mindset of “why buy this? I don’t need it…I already have one…it’s just a waste of money.” This is true and it makes me very unhappy with the human mind, no offense! So I am going to try to convince you to buy this product and realize that is not just a waste of money.

Everyone has a computer these days and if you notice they are all different with unique features such as the appearance or even the hardware. Whenever friends come over they compliment me on my computer, saying it looks awesome! The uniqueness of my computer will stick in their minds as they leave, the shiny plastic surrounding it…with blue LED lights glaring out of the glass window on the side panel, lighting up their faces as they surf the web. Finding it hard to pay attention to the monitor because of the beautiful thing sitting in the corner of their eyes. Ok….maybe that’s just the way I feel, but I’m sure others have that same experience. But that just shows how much I love the new look of my PC!

As much as appearance plays a large role in the reason for buying a new desktop PC case, I can’t forget to mention the improvement in performance and customization. When buying a computer from a manufacturer such as DELL or HP they usually fit it to the needs of their own manufactured hardware inside, meaning you can’t replace a old motherboard (largest hardware component in a computer) with a new one from a different company. Buying a new desktop PC case will make it available for you to upgrade any hardware with ease and not have to worry about it not fitting. Being able to upgrade your hardware will allow you to increase the performance of your PC.

Have you ever felt the top of your computer and it was really warm? Well that is actually a sign of your computer overheating and can potentially damage your hardware causing your computer to one day crash. This is actually the largest reason why people choose to purchase a new desktop PC case for their computer; newer cases are designed for certain airflow patterns. While shopping for new cases, you will probably see these large vents and fans all over…that’s because if you increase the amount of fans and vents in your computer it will cool down the internal temperature and actually increase the performance and the life of some hardware. Most new cases are equipped with internal thermometers that are displayed on the front of the case, allowing you to actually monitor the temperature inside the case.

So long story short, if you buy a new desktop PC case for your computer you are guaranteed to have a better experience while using it because of the sleek new look it has, and it can increase the performance of your computer. Prices for a new desktop PC case range from $80 – $150, which is not a waste of money at all if you ask me. I hope I was able to try to convince you to buy this product, if I didn’t…please go read some other guys article because you would really be missing out on a great new experience.
